Cat Bristow CPA, CA

Founder

Cat grew up in Orillia, ON and decided to start her own business serving the community she knew so well. You may have run into her at local Chamber or Rotary Club events. Cat has served as an accountant for 10 years since graduating from Laurentian University. She continues to learn through the experiences of each small business owner that she helps. She is passionate about solving business issues so owners can thrive. During winters, you can find her and her husband snowboarding at the local hill. Summer vacations are most often spent camping with friends.

Ashton Corbeil

Senior Accountant

Ashton discovered a passion for accounting while bookkeeping for her family business. This experience led her to obtain an Advanced Diploma in Business Accounting with Honours from Georgian College.  While gaining further practical experience, she continued to advance her education part-time towards a Degree in Business Administration from Laurentian University. Ashton has a bright future and is already an asset to the team. As well as keeping busy with work and studies, Ashton is the mother of a busy toddler.  Her family enjoys the outdoors, including ice skating, fishing and visits to the cottage.

FAQ

Can I afford to hire an accounting firm?

We are an affordable option that allows you to focus on other aspects of your operation.

For many businesses, we are a great alternative to hosting your own in-house accounting department. The valuable perspective you gain from keeping monthly records allows you to make better management decisions and to take advantage of government programs more quickly. If you operate in a competitive industry, the quality of your bookkeeping data could be your competitive advantage. Detailed records may show you where your costs are piling up, which goods/services need price increases to stay profitable, or what would happen if you expanded your business. We love using data to reduce the risk from your business plans.

At a minimum, you need to file personal or corporate taxes for your business. For this reason, many people only look at their finances once a year. You should consider the opportunity cost of not analyzing current records on your performance. How much is being left on the table by following your status quo?

I’m worried about fraud. Can you help?

Unfortunately, fraud is as much of a concern in a small town, as it is anywhere else. Luckily, there are several steps you can take to prevent, mitigate, or investigate a suspicion of fraud. We can review your financial procedures and recommend controls to keep your money safe. A brief discussion on how your financial information and bank accounts operate may be all it takes to identify and correct for the most common red flags.

Please consider these common scenarios that leave businesses vulnerable:

  • accounting records are completed by a single employee with little to no supervision

  • employees have access to online banking and have rights to set up new payees

  • cheques that clear the bank are not reviewed by anyone other than the employee who has rights to print cheques

  • employees hold company credit cards that are not reviewed before monthly payments are made

  • office paperwork is untidy, not readily available, or only provided as reproductions (versus originals)
